Public Health Pathway Programs: An Urgently Needed, Valuable Intervention to Strengthen the Government Public Health Workforce

The National Consortium for Public Health Workforce Development has identified public health pathway programs, particularly those with a focus on people from historically underrepresented and underserved communities, as a successful intervention to diversify and strengthen the government public health workforce, in both the immediate and long term. With support, recognition, and expansion, pathway programs promise to be a major force in getting more people to join, stay, and advance in government public health jobs.

To increase the reach and impact of Pathway Programs, we have published Public Health Pathway Programs: An Urgently Needed, Valuable Intervention to Strengthen the Government Public Health Workforce.

This brief report outlines what pathway programs are, provides examples, and calls on public and private funders, health department leadership, pathway program leadership, and public health membership organizations to take action.

Access a list of examples of national and state public health pathway programs.
